USDC vs USDbC on Base: what's the difference?

Both are dollar tokens on Base, both are worth about $1, and wallets sometimes show them side by side. They are not the same token, and mixing them up can leave a deposit uncredited.

Where USDbC came from

Base went live in August 2023, before Circle had issued USDC on it. To fill the gap, USDC from Ethereum was brought over through the standard Base bridge. The result was a wrapped token called USDbC (USD Base Coin). In September 2023 Circle launched native USDC on Base, and most apps have since moved to it.

The difference

How to tell which one you have

  1. Look at the symbol in your wallet: USDC or USDbC.
  2. Names can be faked, so check the contract address as well. Compare it with the Base USDC address on Circle's official website.
  3. On Basescan, the token page shows the name, the contract and who created it.

Why it matters

How to switch USDbC to USDC

  1. Open the swap page and connect your wallet.
  2. Choose the Base network. Sell USDbC and receive USDC.
  3. Check the quote and sign. Both tokens stay on Base, so no bridge is involved.
